Large language models understand text by turning words into numbers called tokens, then giving each token meaning through embeddings and position information. They use attention to let tokens share information and a feed-forward network to process each token independently. Finally, the model predicts the next token step-by-step, learning from huge amounts of text to get better at this task.
It is very hard to predict how AI will change jobs because jobs and businesses evolve in complex and unexpected ways. Past technology waves show that automation often changes job tasks rather than simply replacing jobs. Inspired in part by the return of an age-old discussion about how bad Judith Butler's writing is (answer: it's pretty bad!) I've been thinking about advice on how to write well. I've argued before that a large proportion of such advice is useless, or self-contradictory, or regularly ignored by the person dispensing it. (\"Omit needless words,\" declares William Strunk, in The Elements of Style. Well, yes, but if you already know a word is needless, you shouldn't need to be told to omit it, and if you don't know it's needless, how is Strunk's advice going to help?) Still, three pieces of advice have made a concrete difference to my own productivity as a writer – and I think also to the quality of my writing, though that's not for me to say. Here they are, in case they might help you too: Good writing is pointing out. As Steven Pinker notes in his book The Sense of Style, writing is cognitively unnatural: it's such a new way of communicating, on the timescale of human evolution, that it's little wonder we struggle. ...

Intelligent people can believe in irrational ideas due to their ability to rationalize. Education and IQ alone cannot overcome biased thinking; humility and curiosity are essential for seeking objective truth. Admitting fallibility and embracing curiosity are key to overcoming biased reasoning and finding genuine understanding.
Intelligence is not rationality
Smart people often believe wrong things because intelligence can serve goals other than truth, like status or belonging. Skilled reasoning lets them justify beliefs they want to hold, not what is true. Humility and curiosity, not raw smarts, steer intelligence toward truth.
Most people suck at setting goals.\n\nThe reason is they optimize for the destination, not the journey. \n\nHere’s what to do instead:

J. Sai Deepak is an engineer turned litigator turned author. His two books India that is Bharat: Coloniality, Civilisation, Constitution and India, Bharat and Pakistan: The Constitutional Journey of Sandwiched Civilisation are two voluminous well-researched books on the Indian civilisation. His views are hugely popular among a cross-section of the Indian population which believes that the way Indians have read and perceived the history of their own civilisation is through the prism of their colonial masters and that Indians constantly seek validation. On the other hand, some historians feel that J. Sai Deepak and other historians are whitewashing history through an unnecessary debate of native versus colonial prism. In an in-depth conversation with Smita Prakash, J. Sai Deepak busts historical myths which have been propagated by historians for decades. From Wahhabism to Sufism to the origins of the Two-Nation Theory he explains each topic meticulously. Throughout the conversation, he emphasises the fact that the...

The document discusses a panel discussion among CEOs of non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) on the topic of co-lending. The CEOs highlight that co-lending between banks and NBFCs has emerged out of a necessity, as banks were unable to fulfill their priority sector lending (PSL) requirements. The co-lending model allows NBFCs to leverage the balance sheet of banks and generate additional profitability. The CEOs believe that the co-lending model is still in its early stages but shows promise for both NBFCs and banks in terms of capital efficiency and reaching out to the micro and small enterprise sector.

The transportation sector is the fourth-largest global contributor of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, following Energy, Industry, and Agriculture. In the U.S., Transportation is the largest direct source of GHG emissions, representing 29% of total. This is why decarbonizing transportation must be a priority. Electric vehicles (EVs) are a viable solution to reduce CO2 emissions from passenger cars. But for long-haul transportation – which includes medium and heavy-duty vehicles, aviation, and maritime use cases – EVs have not offered a compelling solution given limitations in range and payload capacity. In searching for alternatives, hydrogen has been highlighted as the fuel of choice for its potential role in supporting a zero-emission, heavy-duty transportation industry. Hydrogen scales very well when there is a high-energy requirement and offers fueling speeds comparable to those of diesel. But challenges related to the sourcing, processing, and storage of hydrogen have limited its mainstream adoption. This is...

There are three important facts about bullshit: It’s everywhere, it’s influential, and it’s dangerous. The amount of publicly accessible information today would have seemed unfathomable 10 or 20 years ago. What used to be hidden is now free and abundant, from financial information to global news to insight into how millions of people live on social media. But are we actually better informed? Are we making decisions? Less susceptible to bad ones? Sometimes yes. But often the answer is no, or we’ve gone backwards, and part of the reason is that information turns into bullshit as easily as ice turns into water. Bullshit can go unnoticed because people are more concerned with lies. Lies, once spotted, are unmistakable and their damage is obvious. But bullshit stops just short of a lie, mixing the integrity of the truth with the deceit of a lie in a way that leaves both the bullshiter and his recipient feeling satisfied. If a company tells investors it has $20 million in the bank when it actually only has $10 million...

It highlights the importance of creating surplus and reducing friction in transactions, using Google as an example of positive reputation in information liquidity. The text also touches on the perception of finance as a profession, with individuals like Kris Abdelmessih and Agustin Lebron sharing insights on risk pooling, efficient risk allocation, and the role of finance in human progress. Overall, it emphasizes the intertwined nature of finance with human advancement despite negative perceptions and the need for a nuanced understanding of its functions.

Let’s say you exercise an hour a day, seven days a week. Sweat, grunting, the real deal. Exercising does two things: It makes you hungry and makes you proud. So let’s say after every workout you eat a huge dinner with extra dessert. You know that’s not ideal, but you just accomplished something hard, so it feels justified. After a year of this you haven’t lost any weight, which was your goal. You can’t figure it out. You’re exercising every day. You’re so frustrated. The name for this is “food compensation,” and it’s wily foe. In his book The Body, Bill Bryson writes: One study in America found that people overestimate the number of calories they burned in a workout by a factor of four. They also then consumed, on average, about twice as many calories as they had just burned off … the fact is, you can quickly undo a lot of exercise by eating a lot of food, and most of us do. You can’t measure the benefit of exercise just by tracking how much you work out. It’s the gap between your workout and avoiding offsetting...

A few short stories: The CEO of Bronco Wine – which sells the Charles Shaw “Two Buck Chuck” wine at Trader Joe’s – was once asked how he’s able to sell wine for less than the cost of bottled water. He replied: “They’re overcharging you for the water. Don’t you get it?” Franklin Roosevelt looked around the room and chuckled when his presidential library opened in 1941. A reporter asked why he was so cheerful. “I’m thinking of all the historians who will come here thinking they’ll find the answers to their questions,” he said. Everything we know about history is limited to what’s been written down, shared publicly, or spoken into a camera. The stuff that’s been kept secret, in someone’s head, taken to the grave, must be – I don’t know – 1,000 times as large and more interesting. Years before the Wright Brothers flew, scores of other entrepreneurs attempted to build an airplane, tinkering with different models to see what might work. One was a German inventor named Otto Lilienthal. On one flight in August 1896, Lil...
Analyzing a company's cash flow statement is crucial for investors, as it provides insights into the company's financial health. The cash flow statement shows the amount of cash entering and leaving the business, and it is divided into three sections: operating activities, investing activities, and financing activities. The operating activities section reflects cash generated from the company's products or services, while the investing activities section includes cash used for investments. The financing activities section shows cash from investors or banks and cash paid to shareholders. Understanding these sections and key line items, such as net cash provided by operating activities and free cash flow, can help investors evaluate a company's performance and determine its value.
The latticework structure is a metaphor used to organize and reinforce ideas and mental models, which requires fluency in multiple disciplines. Taking the time to understand general principles allows for the synthesis of ideas into a whole greater than the sum of its parts. This provides freedom to work smarter and not harder, and to think from first principles rather than by analogy. Understanding reality and opportunity costs helps to focus on important problems, while the scientific method and understanding of human behavior help to make better decisions. Comparative advantage states that two people, organizations, or even entire nations could be better off by trading with each other, even if one of them was superior at everything they traded.

A lot of things don’t make any sense. The numbers don’t add up, the explanations are full of holes. And yet they keep happening – people making crazy decisions, reacting in bizarre ways. Over and over. Historian Will Durant once said, “logic is an invention of man and may be ignored by the universe.” And it often is, which can drive you mad if you expect the world to work in rational ways. A common cause of everything from divisive arguments to bad forecasting is that it can be hard to distinguish what’s happening from what you think should be happening. Two short war stories to show you what I mean. The Battle of the Bulge was one of the deadliest American military battles in history. Nineteen thousand American soldiers were killed, another 70,000 wounded, in just over a month as Nazi Germany made an ill-fated last push against the Allies. Part of the reason it was so bloody is that Americans were surprised. And part of the reason they were surprised is that in the rational minds of American generals, it made n...

Coordination can be improved through better information sharing, stronger organizations, and governance technologies, but it can also lead to harmful collusion if not managed properly. Decentralization can help prevent collusion by making it harder for groups to conspire and allowing for alternative systems to emerge if collusion occurs. Overall, while coordination can solve problems, too much of it can threaten fairness and stability within a system.

A big lesson from history is how chance encounters lead to both magic and mayhem in ways that would have been impossible to predict. Let me show you three times history hung by a thread. Giuseppe Zangara was tiny, barely five feet tall. He stood on a chair outside a Miami political rally in 1933 because that was the only way he could aim his gun across the crowd. Zangara fired five shots. One of them hit Chicago mayor Anton Cermak, who was shaking hands with Zagara’s intended target. Cermak died. The target – Franklin Roosevelt – was sworn in as president two weeks later. Within months of inauguration Roosevelt transformed the U.S. economy through the New Deal. John Nance Garner – who would have become president had Zangara hit his target – opposed most of the New Deal’s deficit spending. He almost certainly wouldn’t have enacted the same policies, some of which still shape today’s economy. Captain William Turner invited his niece, actress Mercedes Desmore, to tour his massive ocean liner before it sailed from N...

This post is sort of about that battle, but more generally it's about two different forms of uncertainty for which humans have varying degrees of stomach for, and how they should be accounted for when deciding how much volatility your trading or investment portfolio should have: \"Risk\" (which we can think of as known unknowns, or at least the amount of volatility expected from a risk & return model which is calibrated on past data) and \"Uncertainty\" (which we can think of as unknown unknowns, or to be more precise the unknowability of our risk & return model).

Warren Buffett considers the foundation of his multi-billion dollar empire to be a book. At 19 years old, he bought a copy of The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. We don’t know exactly what he paid for it, but in the early 1950s, a hardcover typically went for $1.30. Today, Buffett’s worth $108.7 billion, having given away some $37 billion to charitable causes. Not a bad ROI! Some people might recoil at categorizing a book that way, but as a lover of literature, I have no problem with it. I myself wouldn’t be writing this to you today if I hadn’t bought a copy of Meditations in 2006 for $8.25 on Amazon. That book of philosophy taught me not just about life, but also schooled me in the art of writing, in working with and managing people, and gave me the speciality which I now write my own books about. The Battle of Long Island was a disaster for George Washington’s army. His 10,000 troops were crushed by the British and its 400-ship fleet. But it could have been so much worse. It could have been the end of the Revolutionary War. All the British had to do was sail up the East River and Washington’s cornered troops would have been wiped out, with Washington captured and executed for treason. That was their plan. But it never happened, because the wind wasn’t blowing in the right direction. Historian David McCullough once explained to Charlie Rose: McCullough: If the wind had been in the other direction on the night of August 28th, I think it would have all been over. Rose: No United States of America if that had happened. McCullough: I don’t think so. Rose: Just because of the wind, history was changed. McCullough: Absolutely. We know one version of history – the version that actually happened – but there are infinite alternative versions that were just as likely to come true. Read enough of these freak events ...
Some market makers lose reserves during rapid price changes, but others keep balances stable regardless of trading paths. Path-independent market makers prevent attacks that drain reserves by ensuring trades only shift assets predictably. These market makers provide reliable liquidity for users, though they may not always make a profit.

There aren’t many iron laws of money. But here’s one, and perhaps the most important: If expectations grow faster than income you’ll never be happy with your money. One of the most important financial skills is getting the goalpost to stop moving. It’s also one of the hardest. First, a little story about the 1950s. “The present and immediate future seem astonishingly good,” LIFE magazine’s January, 1953 cover story begins. “The country has just lived through what was economically the greatest year in its history” it wrote. It had done this with “10 straight years of full employment, through new management attitudes which include an increasing realization that the well-paid worker, who does his job under healthy and agreeable conditions, is a valuable worker.” Wealth came so fast to so many it was jarring. “In the 1930s I worried about how I could eat,” LIFE quotes one taxi driver. “Now I’m worrying about where to park.” If these quotes don’t surprise you it’s because the 1950s are so often remembered as the gold...

Steven Pressfield wrote for 30 years before publishing The Legend of Bagger Vance. His career leading up to then was bleak, at one point living in a halfway house because it had cheap rent. He once spoke about the people he met living there: The people in this halfway house, we used to hang out in the kitchen and talk all night long, were among the smartest people that I ever met and the funniest and the most interesting. And what I concluded from hanging out with them and from others in a similar situation was that they weren’t crazy at all. They were actually the smart people who had seen through the bullshit. And because of that, they couldn’t function in the world. They couldn’t hold a job because they just couldn’t take the bullshit, and that was how they wound up in institutions. The greater society thought, “Well these people are absolute rejects. They can’t fit in.” But in fact they were actually the people that really saw through everything. This may not have been Pressfield’s point, but it reminds of s...

At one end you have the pure optimist. He thinks everything is great, will always be great, and sees all negativity as a character flaw. Part is rooted in ego: he’s so confident in himself that he can’t fathom anything going wrong. Then there are extremely optimistic people who accept that bad things occasionally happen to other people. They read about bad news with a detached sense of fascination, but view their own future as clear sailing and can’t imagine anything different. Next are the optimists who are capable of being skeptical of other peoples’ optimism. They view their future as pristine but possess a low-grade BS detector, sensing when optimism is actually a sales pitch. One rung down are the optimists who are wholly confident in themselves but equally pessimistic about others. They’re easy to mistake for pessimists, but they actually view their own futures as flawless. Then there’s a special breed: The optimist who views everyone’s future as bleak only because a few things, or a few people, stand in t...
Cardinal Preferences Explain Why All Institutions are Woke
Markets and smart incentives can guide resource use and improve institutions. \nHarberger taxes and other \"radical market\" ideas let owners set prices but face taxes and buyouts to reduce holdouts and inefficiency. \nWith good defaults and helpful AIs, these market designs could be tested in smaller, decentralized settings before wider adoption.
Thirty-seven thousand Americans died in car accidents in 1955, six times today’s rate adjusted for miles driven. Ford began offering seat belts in every model that year. It was a $27 upgrade, equivalent to about $190 today. Research showed they reduced traffic fatalities by nearly 70%. But only 2% of customers opted for the upgrade. Ninety-eight percent of buyers preferred to remain at the mercy of inertia. Things eventually changed, but it took decades. Seatbelt usage was still under 15% in the early 1980s. It didn’t exceed 80% until the early 2000s – almost half a century after Ford offered them in all cars. It’s easy to underestimate how social norms stall change, even when the change is an obvious improvement. One of the strongest forces in the world is the urge to keep doing things as you’ve always done them, because people don’t like to be told they’ve been doing things wrong. Change eventually comes, but agonizingly slower than you might assume. Dunkirk was a miracle. More than 330,000 Allied soldiers, pi...
Games of strategy involve players making decisions based on their beliefs about others' choices, leading to a Nash equilibrium where everyone acts in their best interest. In simultaneous-move games, players cannot react to each other’s decisions, making the analysis more complex. The theory also considers different strategies, including those that may prioritize safety over the Nash equilibrium approach.

History is one damned thing after another. A war ends, a boom follows, then a crash, then an uprising, then a pandemic, a breakthrough, a new boom, a new war. On and on, from agony to awe. A question that always arises after a terrible event is why haven’t we learned our lesson? Financial crises keep happening, again and again. People have been making the same investing mistakes for hundreds of years. The same military blunders, over and over. The characters change but the plot rarely does. Jason Zweig explained years ago that part of the reason the same mistakes repeat isn’t because people don’t learn their lesson; it’s because people “are too good at learning lessons, and they learn overprecise lessons.” A good lesson from the dot-com bust was the perils of overconfidence. But the lesson most people took away was “the stock market becomes overvalued when it trades at a P/E ratio over 30.” It was hyperspecific, so many of the same investors who lost their shirts in 2002 got up and walked straight into the housi...

Rare and helpful: Low susceptibility to FOMO. But for a different reason than you might think. The urge to buy an investment because its price went up means you probably don’t know why the price has gone up. And if you don’t know why the price has gone up you’re more likely to bail when it goes down. Most good investing is just sticking around for the longest time possible, through thick and thin. Quash the need to own whatever is going up the most and you reduce the urge to abandon whatever eventually goes down. Someone will always be getting richer than you. It’s OK. Knowing what game you’re playing. An idea that’s obvious but overlooked is that investors on the same field play different games. We buy the same companies, read the same news, talk to the same people, are quoted the same market prices – but we’re everything from day traders to endowments with century-long time horizons. Even investors who think they’re playing the same game – say, stock pickers – have wildly different goals and risk tolerances. M...
A majority of borrowing in rural households in developing countries is from informal lenders. This article examines the relationship between these informal lenders and banks in rural India, from the early 2000s onwards. It shows that informal moneylenders rely on credit from banks to ease their own lending capital constraints. Hence, rather than competing with informal moneylenders, banks effectively collaborate with them.\n

Some things scale well. Double their size and you get double the output (or more). Other things don’t, and my God is it important to know which is which. Let me tell you about Robert Wadlow. He was enormous, the largest human ever known. A pituitary gland abnormality bombarded Wadlow’s body with growth hormone, leading to staggering size. He was six feet tall at age seven, seven feet tall by age 11, and when he died at age 22 stood an inch shy of nine feet tall, weighed 500 pounds, and wore size 37 shoes. His hand was a foot wide. He was what fictional stories would portray as a superhuman athlete, capable of running faster, jumping higher, lifting more weight and crushing more bad guys than any normal person. Like a real-life Paul Bunyan. But that was not Wadlow’s life at all. He required steel leg braces to stand and a cane to walk. His walk wasn’t much more than a limp, requiring tremendous effort. What few videos of Wadlow exist show a man whose movements are strained and awkward. He was rarely seen standing...

No matter how good their risk management systems are, companies can’t plan for everything. Some risks are outside people’s realm of experience or so remote no one could have imagined them. Some result from a perfect storm of coinciding breakdowns, and some materialize very rapidly and on an enormous scale. These novel risks, as the authors call them, cannot be addressed by following a standard playbook. This article describes how to detect the emergence of a novel risk (start by looking for anomalies and appointing “chief worry officers”) and then how to mobilize resources to mitigate its impact, deploying a critical incident team or empowering local personnel to tackle it. Loneliness has more to do with our perceptions than how much company we have. It’s just as possible to be painfully lonely surrounded by people as it is to be content with little social contact. Here’s how we can change our perceptions by making and experiencing art.
The authors argue that 2020 — with its stresses from Covid-19 and the tariffs imposed on Chinese goods by the Trump administration — could mark an inflection point in the bilateral trade of goods between the United States and India. They look at India as a sourcing partner for goods, becoming a partial replacement for imports from China. While India still poses obstacles due to practices relating to both land and labor, they argue, foreign companies wishing to build their own factories can overcome these challenges by starting out as a buyer rather than as an investor, understanding that India is a diverse country with rules varying state-by-state, using a cultural interpreter, even when language interpretation isn’t necessary, and understanding that sourcing from India takes time and patience.

This situation can lead to a liquidity crisis if the flow of USD is not maintained, highlighting the system's dependence on US monetary policy.

Summary Bloom argues that the individual is merely a “cell” within the larger group and that these groups are the primary units of selection no genes and human psychology. Hierarchy is front and center in Bloom’s understanding of the world. “This book is about the social body in which we are the unwitting cells. It […]
There are two tragedies in life, Oscar Wilde once said: not getting what you want and getting everything you want. The last, he lamented, is much worse. I wanted to be a writer. I don’t know when that dream started, but for a very long time, I craved accomplishment in this creative calling that very few are lucky enough to make a living in, let alone find success in. Of course, like most people, I also fantasized about what it would be like to have money, or more specifically, to have lots of it. It’d be cool to be a little famous too, while I was at it. To be connected with or have influence over important people, to be sought after for advice or input. That has to be awesome too, right? Maybe, apart from the genuine love of writing, that’s what attracted me to being an author. It was a way to have all those things. And indeed, in the last year or so, it has become harder to deny that I have accomplished most of them. My books have sold extremely well. They have been reviewed in major newspapers and are tra...
Life is not a competition between you and the universe; feeling alone or troubled is just a mindset. You suffer because you misuse your mind's power of memory and imagination instead of learning to control your thoughts and emotions. The key is to understand yourself early and handle your inner world well to live a peaceful, sensible life.
If life is a game, how do you play it? The answer will have a huge impact on your choices, your satisfaction, and how you achieve success.
When your parents love you conditionally you never feel good enough and often feel empty. Here are 7 signs you grew up with this kind of love.
The philosopher Kwame Appiah writes that “in life, the challenge is not so much to figure out how best to play the game; the challenge is to figure out what game you’re playing.” When I try to figure out what game I’m playing, I see that for the last 25 years I have been playing […]
In this classic game theory experiment, you must decide: rat out another for personal benefit, or cooperate? The answer may be more complicated than you think.
To start with, that means it should be correct. But it's not enough merely to be correct.
It’s little wonder that people would believe that higher taxes would make them feel bad. But this is a cognitive error, pure and simple.
Nothing that’s happened had to happen, or must happen again. That’s why historians aren’t prophets. Wars, booms, busts, inventions, breakthroughs – none of those things were inevitable. They happened, and they’ll keep happening in various forms. But specific events that shape history are always low-probability events. Their surprise is what causes them to leave a mark. And they were surprising specifically because they weren’t inevitable. A lot of things have to go right (or wrong) to move the needle in what is an otherwise random swarm of eight billion people on earth just trying to make it through the day. The problem when studying historical events is that you know how the story ends, and it’s impossible to un-remember what you know today when thinking about the past. It’s hard to imagine alternative paths of history when the actual path is already known. So things always look more inevitable than they were. Now let me tell you a story about the Great Depression. “After booms come busts,” is about as close to...

In my previous posts on loss aversion (here, here and here), I foreshadowed a post on how “ergodicity economics” might shed some light on whether we need loss aversion to explain people’s choices under uncertainty. Economist Ole Peters discusses ergodic and non-ergodic systems in relationship to expected value versus temporal average growth, using the example of a simple coin flip gambling situation. Peters explains that although in aggregate the population experiences positive expected value when taking the bet, the typical person does not. By analyzing the individual's risk preferences and applying the Kelly Criterion, Peters offers optimal bet sizes that maximize geometric growth rate for long term gains. He further introduces the concept of diversification and its importance in risk management.

Complicated stuff can stem from a handful of common roots. Understanding those common roots can be more important than trying to wrap your head around complexity. To show you what I mean, let me tell you a story about stories. Tens of millions of fictional stories have been published, written by authors of every age, culture, and life experience that exists. Most never knew each other or read each other’s work. Their stories range from prehistoric battles to science fiction. Stories are perhaps the most diverse things our imaginations have ever created. But all of these stories – every story, according to author Christopher Booker – take shape in remarkably similar ways. “There are a small number of plots which are so fundamental to the way we tell stories that it is virtually impossible for any storyteller ever entirely to break away from them,” Booker writes. He argues only seven plots exist in the history of fictional storytelling: 1. Overcoming Monsters, 2. Rags to Riches, 3. The Quest, 4. Voyage and Return,...

While next-generation models in quantitative finance have illuminated the origins of market bubbles and crashes by incorporating herding and imitation behavior,
Ergodicity - the average outcome of the group is the same as the average outcome of the individual over time.
Ergodic systems have outcomes that are consistent over time for individuals and groups, while non-ergodic systems do not guarantee the same results for individuals as for the group. This difference can lead to significant risks, especially in finance, where assumptions about consistent returns can result in losses. To navigate non-ergodic situations better, individuals can diversify their investments and make their liabilities more flexible.

An irony of studying history is that we often know exactly how a story ends, but have no idea where it began. Here’s an example. What caused the financial crisis? Well, you have to understand the mortgage market. What shaped the mortgage market? Well, you have to understand the 30-year decline in interest rates that preceded it. What caused falling interest rates? Well, you have to understand the inflation of the 1970s. What caused that inflation? Well, you have to understand the monetary system of the 1970s and the hangover effects from the Vietnam War. What caused the Vietnam War? Well, you have to understand the West’s fear of communism after World War II … And so on endlessly. Every current event – big or small – has parents, grandparents, great grandparents, siblings, and cousins. Ignoring that family tree can muddy your understanding of events, giving a false impression of why things happened, how long they might last, and under what circumstances they might happen again. Viewing events in isolation, witho...

The author argues that social systems can be understood as computational processes that aim to reduce uncertainty about people's behavior. By recognizing the subjective nature of our perceptions, we can foster empathy and better communication between differing beliefs. The goal is to develop a shared understanding that helps everyone achieve their objectives while minimizing misunderstandings and conflicts.
Leaders often tell themselves stories that shape the way they think and lead, such as, “Everything is always a battle around here.” For better or for worse, our stories shape what we notice and how we interpret it. They inform our decision making and behavior. If, for instance, you see your workplace as a battlefield, you expect hostility. You’re primed to attack and defend. Often, these stories don’t serve us well. There may come a time when you need to shift your guiding story to one that enables you to pursue new goals or do things differently. The first step is to identify and examine the stories you tell yourself and others. The next step is to consider how those stories affect you and your team. Any leader can begin to develop this powerful skill by learning to recognize the stories they live by, examining their effects, and refining them to emphasize empowering elements. The rewards of doing so include an increased sense of humanity, coherence, and liberation.

Amazon launched 22 years ago this week. Its first web page shows its early days: What’s neat about this isn’t what’s changed. It’s what’s stayed the same. The line, “One million titles, consistently low prices” seems like marketing guff. But it helps explain why Amazon has dominated where others have failed. The allure of the Internet in 1995 was betting on change. New paradigms born. Old strategies discarded. Something requiring radically different thinking. Yet Amazon’s focus from day one was as old as it gets. Selection and price. Businesses have pursued the idea for millennia. Jeff Bezos once explained why this was critical: I very frequently get the question: “What’s going to change in the next 10 years?” That’s a very interesting question. I almost never get the question: “What’s not going to change in the next 10 years?” And I submit to you that that second question is actually the more important of the two. You can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time. In our retail busines...

But in reality, we live in an 80/20 world, where the top 1% of fat tails account for 50% of the results. The people who understand this seem to attract luck, but really they’ve just adopted the 80/20 curve model.

Based on our understanding of the world having spent our entire lives in Mediocristan and the fact that up until relatively recent history, we have lived in Mediocristan, a turkey’s view of the world is highly rational. It’s also wrong. “A turkey is fed for a thousand days by a butcher; every day confirms to its staff of analysts that butchers love turkeys “with increased statistical confidence.” The butcher will keep feeding the turkey until a few days before Thanksgiving… [The] turkey will have a revision of belief— right when its confidence in the statement that the butcher loves turkeys is maximal and ‘it is very quiet’ and soothingly predictable in the life of the turkey.” -N.N. He encourages listeners to be conscious and aware enough to choose what has meaning and what to worship, and not to be a slave to their natural default settings.

It highlights various traits that great investors have, such as confidence and an intense desire to learn from their mistakes, as well as traits that most investors share, such as an MBA or high IQ. It explains that the ability to compound money at 20% forever requires the right skills and knowledge from a young age and that reading or studying can only take you so far. Ultimately, it states that the true sources of competitive advantage for an investor are structural and cannot be learned later on in life.
Entrepreneurs prefer effectual reasoning over causal reasoning in the early stages of a new venture, which is a creative process that begins with three categories of means: Who they are, What they know, and Whom they know. Effectual reasoning focuses on affordable loss, strategic partnerships, and leveraging contingencies, while causal reasoning focuses on expected return, competitive analyses, and exploiting pre-existing knowledge. Effectual reasoning involves recognizing that the future can be shaped by human action, and that failure can be minimized by allowing it to occur earlier and with less investment.
